Illinois Rise Ultimate Frisbee: Captain

Illinois Rise Ultimate Frisbee: Spring 2021 Season

Ultimate Frisbee has been a passion of mine since high school, and I am very glad to have the opportunity to be Captain for Illinois Rise for the 2022-2023 season. Our premiere team travels around the country to competes at the national level, and our most recent achievement is qualifying for nationals in the extra Fall 2021 season after not being able to qualify since 2015.

One thing that I find special about ultimate frisbee is the self-regulation of the sport, which requires a high level of sportsmanship while also maintaining competitiveness. As a captain, I am motivating my players to improve themselves physically and mentally outside of practice while also teaching concepts and mentoring players on how to play the game well.

The type of leadership used when captaining Rise is very different than the leadership used when directing a pit. Issues like people not showing up to practice, low morale, and distracted players are all usually not an issue within a musical pit. I as a captain am responsible for both how my players perform and feel on and off the field. I have planned efficient and fun practices, managed a board to coordinate tournaments and scheduling, implemented team challenges to keep conditioning up through the winter, and given personalized feedback to help each player improve. This is a position that I hold very close to my heart because of the trust that everyone has put in me.
