Out of Time

Percival (played by Jeremy Poynton) and Sasha (played by Shelbi Voss) at the bar

This was one of my first works as a film scorer, and I worked on this short film with a colleague of mine in CS+Music, Renzo Ledesma.

The sonic focus for this film was a “combination of both 80’s synthwave and a jazz noir”, which was a challenging topic because the styles were so different. Renzo and I started with developing leitmotifs for each of the characters and being able to adapt these motifs to either a synthwave or noir feel dependent on the scene. I found that scoring the film to a final cut was extremely helpful so that we would be able to add musical cues based on cuts and beats in the film.

Looking back on this project, I believe that it is a bit “overscored” since there is very little time in the film where no music happens. As well, each cue in the film had some sort of musical cue alongside it, and it made the music feel forced in some places.

Synopsis: A medieval knight named Percival Vain (Jeremy Poynton) is transported to modern-day USA. With no way home, he helps a young woman (Shelbi Voss) investigate the disappearance of her brother. Unraveling clues, the knight begins to suspect that he isn't the only one out of time.
