ISM Spring 2023 Cabaret
The Illini Student Musicals holds a Cabaret show for members not able to perform in the mainstage show which also doubles as a charity food drive.
This was a wonderful passion project spearheaded by a good friend of mine, Micky Horstman. We had imagined a full production compared to previous semester, complete with a pit, choreography, and minimal technical elements. I had not imagined the amount of work going into this project.
I had the job of finding all parts for my 15 piece orchestra, while transcribing and arranging for the instrumentalists dependent on which parts I could find. Over the course of 3 weeks, I had written ~80 parts for the entire orchestra. This was an extremely helpful exercise, especially for learning how to write for strings. I found that feedback from the instrumentalists themselves was especially useful for future writing.

NOTE FROM THE STAFF This program explores the theme of “self discovery” and “love” highlighting their highs and lows. Life is turbulent and unpredictable, oftentimes we don’t know what the next step will be. As we rapidly approach our graduation date, we are thankful to have had Illini Student Musicals as anchor in our lives and college experience.
