Hairspray

The Corny Collins Show! Photography by David Omari

I served as the Associate Music Director for Uptown Player’s production of Hairspray! This was a lovely experience as I got to play with a 21 piece orchestra and some of my favorite musicians. Under the direction of Tor Campbell, we put together an incredible show about individuality and fighting for what’s right.

I’m very glad that this production didn’t shy away from the racial tensions that are heavily prevalent through the show, as it can be easy to produce Hairspray in a watered down version where it’s just focused on the dance. Having a culturally conscious director was paramount in executing this and I’m very glad to have been part of this production!

This score is probably my favorite score to play, I’ve found more and more freedom in playing chords with slashes and being able to make my own parts given some restrictions. Especially with studying more jazz and understanding the style of the 60’s, I could play this score for a long time!
