I served as the Associate Music Director, Assistant Conductor, and Keyboard Programming for Metropolis’ production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The staff included Director Johanna Miller, Choreographer Mandy Modic, Music Director Aaron Kaplan, and Stage Manager Kyle Aschbrenner.
As I continue to work more and more shows, it gets easier to transition from playing Keys to Conducting. Since Les Mis, I’ve worked more on conducting technique, and one of the focuses was the smoothness of my motions. Previous videos show me conducting like a drum major, with very sharp edges even in tender sections, leading to a tendency to rush. With more of a focus on the inertia of the piece and feeling the weight drop from my elbow, the waltzes feel much more together. As well, being able to conduct multiple shows allows me to figure out what works with an orchestra and what is extraneous. I’m finally finding out how little a conductor has to do to lead the orchestra through the music and allowing them to play.
